Philosophy of Education

        I believe that the school curriculum should be based around the reconstructionism or the critical theory philosophy. This means that the lessons should be based on changing the students thinking, how to improve/change society and make the world a better place. The mission of the teachers and the school to also change society so that we can help improve society along with our students. This also means that we would producing actual helpers to society that will better the world with the real world conversations and tools the teachers and school provided them. Students will discuss controversy and recognize multiple points of view through critical thinking, inquiry, question asking and actually learning to teach these strategies to others. Students should also be able to have flexible seating and allow them the space and freedom to move about the room as they want.

            I think that education is like a box of chocolates; just like how you may not eat every piece chocolate because you don’t eat everyone in the box, you shouldn’t have to learn material that won’t benefit you. For too long, students have learned material that was applicable decades ago and the world the changing rapidly. The schools should be changing along with the environment around and preparing them for the workforce and jobs that are available in this decade. Right now, when students go to school, they are bored because students are being taught useless skills that don’t apply to them and what they want to learn. Students are the reasons why teachers have a job so why not let them enjoy coming to school for the six hours and make them wish that it was ten hours instead.

            Also, the curriculum that we have now does nothing to prepare our students for the real world. We also can’t rewrite the curriculum for every state to learn the same thing because not all lessons apply to different types of neighborhoods. The neighborhoods that these students live in are different all around the country and that’s amazing; so then we should teach them to learn how to react in that situation or comprehend why things in their areas are happening. Just like how each neighborhood is different, so are the students and box of chocolates; let’s starting letting the students decide how they learn.

            We have all gotten used to ignoring the students because “adults know best” since we are “older and wiser”. The students know better than any adult because they are living through it at that exact moment. Most students either know or have an inkling of what profession they want to peruse and yet we do not get the choice to change out schedule to better fit their dreams. Why are we not able to start giving our students the power for once?
